There are probably a few things you already know about Mooney Metaxas Engineering. For instance, you might know that they are a small civil and structural design firm based out of Kitchener, Waterloo. You might also know that they have over 30 years of combined experience. Now, you might know a bit more, but this is all I knew as I endeavoured to join MME as their first Co-Op student.
Day 1, I was introduced to the team and immediately felt a sense of belonging. As a Waterloo student, I have held other positions and never felt so welcome so soon.
Week 1, I was taken to a client meeting and site inspection. By the end of the first month I had researched and written a design comparison memo for a client. And by the end of the second month, I was designing structural components for multiple projects.
My point being, at MME I was given the opportunity to learn and contribute. From the first week, I was put in positions where the work I produced was just as valuable to the final submittal as my co-workers’. As a Co-op student this is something I yearn for. The opportunity to really be part of the team, and MME welcomed me with open arms.
Educational and work experience opportunities aside, MME was also different in terms of their atmosphere. At MME, everyone works together, always. For every three questions I asked, someone was asking me a question back. When hurdles were encountered it was a full team effort to find the solution. I was never “alone” while I was at MME. It is great to work somewhere that is so great at achieving the team-based atmosphere so many companies strive for.
If you are considering a position at MME, you now know a bit more than I did day one. But as hard as I tried, I cannot find the words to properly describe the people I worked with or the extent of the work I did. All I can say is the people at MME are great. The work at MME changes everyday. And if you are looking for a position where you will come to work excited for the day and leave work feeling accomplished, you have chosen the right company.
Until next time…
